The Gift of Giving (and Then Returning)

Late last year, I took a break from writing casino reviews and went off to practice my other speciality: shopping.

I seem to have had no luck with gifts across the Christmas period.

It seems a little strange to be writing this so long after Christmas, but it’s honestly taken this long for late deliveries to come through and people to evaluate the gifts and decide that they would really rather not. Some people have a knack for thinking about a person, identifying what they like – say, for example, casino games – and buying the world’s most perfect gift that surprises, delights and makes them wonder how on earth they got on without it. From tracksuit pants made from a material that will change your life to a perfect hand-carved set of miniature casino games, some people just know what will tick the boxes.

Apparently I’m not one of them.

With a hit rate of less than one in five, apparently I need to stick to writing casino reviews and leave the present-buying to someone without the ludicrous notion that their bookworm bestie might appreciate an ereader, or at least know what it is. Who knew that tech-savvy parents don’t want a laptop because the new iPad is due to come out, or that your sports-mad boyfriend would rather socks than season tickets to the rugby?

And if anyone has ever tried to return any of this stuff – especially from overseas – you’ll know what I mean when I say it is a bona fide pain. Gift receipts notwithstanding, I’m just grateful that they seem to have appreciated the thought behind the presents, if not the gifts themselves.

I’m going to drown my sorrows at a casino online, and hope that I have better luck next year.
