Sven Goran Eriksson Parts Company with Leicester City

Looking back at Sven’s career, is it really a surprise that he has left Leicester City?

In my opinion, Eriksson’s managerial success has been limited and very expensive. He took England to the Quarter Final stages of the World and European Championships. Mexico and Ivory Coast managerial posts were both brief and fruitless.

At club level, Sven spent Manchester City’s cash, but the club only got to ninth place in the Premiership. When he joined Leicester City in 2010 it was more of the same. Sven brought in names like Kasper Schmeichel (son of Peter Schmeichel of Manchester United), Paul Konchesky and Beckford; Sven probably spent around £15 million in total. With this type of spend, promotion to the Premiership was essential.

This year, consistent results have not been Leicester City’s strong points, only winning five out of thirteen league games. In spite of this, the club is two points off the play-offs and five points from automatic promotion, however, losing to Millwall (who are not far off relegation) 3-0 was the last straw.

My best bet is that Sven will take a few months holiday, and then find some other club or country willing to pay an exorbitant salary with associated pay-off clauses. I am sure the likes of Bet365 and Sky Bet etc are already pricing up markets for seeing Mr Eriksson involved in the African Nations Cup - no doubt it will draw some online betting interest!
