There’s a famous quote to do with poker which goes, "If, after the first twenty minutes, you don't know who the sucker at the table is, it's you."

In the realm of online poker this couldn’t be more apt. Offline it’s a lot easier to tell from people’s body language and energy if you’re the player who’s being taken for a ride. Online it’s much harder to tell, especially if you’re multi tabling and concentrating on more than one game.

The first thing to keep in mind whilst playing online poker is a sense of self awareness. Think that you could be playing yourself and imagine what you would think of yourself, if you’re unhappy with the way you’ve been playing, stop. Sit out the game for a bit, cool down and think what hands you played badly. There is nothing worse than continuing to play when you’re on a losing streak.

Keep in mind that when you’re playing Hi stakes or No Limit Hold ‘em there might not always be a sucker at the table, but when you’re playing free poker, there sure as hell will be. Remember how stakes, as much as the cards, tell you about your opponents hand. Keep your hands close and your stakes closer. Look out for unusual raises or short hand play, if a player’s trying to bully the pot, let them, just make sure if you’re going to take them on you’ve got a strong hand.

Poker rooms online are full of players who think they are better than they actually are, it all boils down to pride at the end of the day. Try and imagine that you’re worse than you actually are and you’ll make less mistakes because you’ll take less risks. Don’t believe me? test it out on some free poker games and see that sometimes it helps to imagine you’re the sucker.
