Gus Poyet has been appointed Sunderland head coach, after the club parted ways with Paolo Di Canio in September after 13 games of the Italian being in charge.

The 45 year old Poyet has made it no secret of his desire to be managing in the English Premier League, and has been finally been given the chance by Sunderland owner Ellis Short and Director of Football Roberto De Fanti. It will certainly be a step up from Poyet’s last appointment as Brighton manager, and there will no doubt be online betting on how long he lasts. Poyet has agreed a two year deal, but Sunderland’s record with standing by their managers is not the best, with Gus being the fourth manager to have been appointed by Short since 2009.

Gus Poyet has no former experience of managing in Premier League, has been a player for Chelsea and Tottenham, in addition to being capped twenty six times representing his country. His coaching career began in 2006 as assistant to Dennis Wise at Swindon Town and Leeds United. Gus then went onto Tottenham as first team coach and following that was assistant manager to Juande Ramos. In 2009, Gus took on the role as Brighton Manager, taking the club out of League One and was in last season’s Championship play-off semi finals. He suspended and sacked by Brighton, but has dealt with the break up with dignity and has always been respectful to the fan and players.

Sunderland will be a huge challenge as they are currently sitting at the bottom of the Premier League table with one point out of seven games played. The squad will be at their lowest and understandably so, and it will be up to Poyet to use all his experience both as a player and manager to lift the squad and supporters in order to get the best out of the team and ensure their Premier League survival.
