It has been confirmed that Captain Chris will be out of the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday 14th March.

Sports betting punters will be disappointed, as the ten year old was priced reasonably at 14/1 to win the race. Jockey Richard Johnson planned to ride Captain Chris would have been a popular selection and included in quite a few bets, as the horse won at Kempton and Ascot after a promising finish in the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon where he crossed the line in third place. Trainer Philip Hobbs stated that the horse was suffering from a suspensory problem and regrettably would be out for the rest of the season.

As a result, On His Own, the Willie Mullins trained horse will be submitted for the Gold Cup. This horse has a pretty good chance as well, as he has already won two races this season and hopefully will be able to justify the £27,500 fee associated with entry into the Gold Cup.

Other withdrawals was Rocky Creek, trained by Paul Nicholls, as the horse was suffering from ringworm. Rocky Creek was priced up as a 25/1 chance, and would have an attractive each-way proposition as he finished runner up in the Hennessy Gold Cup and Argento Chase, which were his only two race so far for the season. Paul Nicholls has confirmed that the horse will now be prepped for the Aintree Grand National which is in April.
