Barcelona could not win their eighth consecutive game, with only a goalless draw against Atletico Madrid in the Vicente Calderon stadium.

For online sports betting operators, a draw in any football match is great result, but for Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, who started the game joint leaders with only Barcelona’s superior goal difference separating the two - it was not the best outcome. The top teams in La Liga would have been expecting to make the most of the game, but Barcelona fans would have expected their team to do better as historically, as they have managed to beat Atletico Madrid both home and away for the last three seasons.

However, it was fated to be a tense affair with both teams not wanting to lose and players did not want to risk too much. Early on Atletico Madrid started off the best with a run by Arda who then crossed the ball in front of Barcelona’s goal, only to see Gerard Pique defend well and head the ball out of harms way. However Barcelona soon settled into the game and dominate possession, with the home team defending deep and inviting the visitors to break them down. This tactic could have worked, as Atletico madrid looked very dangerous on the counter attack.

Messi and Neymar came off the bench to try to break the deadlock, but Tata Martino could not manage to secure the win. Messi did have a few chances to make a mark on the game after being out with a hamstring injury, but it seems that the Argentinian international will need to get his match fitness and sharpness back with a couple more game under his belt. In the end, it was the home team that finished the strongest, but Barcelona was strong enough in defence to hold on and not lose their concentration.

The draw now provides the opportunity for Real Madrid to edge closer to the top. A win against Espanyol will see Cristiano Ronaldo’s team just three points behind the top two!
