Fernando Alonso had a surprise win at the Malaysian Grand Prix for the Ferrari team.

He held off Sergio Perez and Lewis Hamilton on a rain soaked track for a well deserved win that sees Ferrari go to the top of the standings. The win will be a pleasant surprise for sports betting operators with most of the betting being on Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.

The conditions suited Ferrari and Alonso took full advantage. He created a huge seven second lead as the race restarted on a wet surface after officials had suspended racing because of heavy rain. Perez from the Sauber team had a good chance of upstaging Alonso, but ran wide and had to be happy with second place. Lewis Hamilton finished the race in third place ahead of Mark Webber.

Perez did his best to catch up to Alonso and as the surface dried, the Sauber driver was biting at the heels of Fernando. But Perez made a mistake which cost him the race when he hit the kerb at Turn 14 and subsequently ran wide, which gave Alonso the space to breathe once again.

The Ferrari win just goes to show how competitive F1 is this year. Racing conditions and on the spot decisions with regards to tyres and pit stops played a huge part in creating a winning advantage. Another chance for Lewis, especially since he started in pole position went begging, but another podium finish for McLaren sees Lewis second in the Drivers’ World Championship.
